Auto Insurance in Oklahoma

To drive legally in Oklahoma, you must carry at least the state’s minimum requirement for liability coverage, known as 25/50/25 insurance:

  • $25,000 bodily injury protection per person
  • $50,000 per accident
  • $25,000 property damage protection

Liability insurance protects both you and other motorists who share the road with you. It covers injuries and property damage, including another person’s vehicle, if you are at fault in an accident.

You may be required to show documentation of this coverage if you are stopped by a law enforcement officer while driving, when you register your vehicle, and if you finance your car or truck. When buying a new vehicle, most dealers won’t let you take it off the lot without proof of liability insurance.

Get the Coverage You Need

The state’s minimum liability insurance may not provide complete coverage in an accident, however. If you damage an expensive vehicle or if accident victims’ medical bills are exceedingly high, you could be left paying the difference out of your own pocket. That’s why the Oklahoma Insurance Department recommends upping your liability coverage to the following:

  • $100,000 bodily injury protection per person
  • $300,000 per accident
  • $100,000 property damage

This is known as 100/300/100 coverage. This is a good starting point, but the agents at J. K. Meadors & Co recommend 250/500/250.

Additionally, your liability insurance does not cover damage to your vehicle if you are at fault in a crash, nor under other circumstances, like your car being damaged by a hit-and-run driver. Therefore, most drivers elect to get comprehensive/collision (sometimes referred to as “full coverage") auto insurance.

Full coverage insurance includes collision insurance to get your vehicle back on the road quickly when you rely on it for work, school, or family activities. It also includes comprehensive coverage, which protects your car or truck in case of damage or loss due to fire, theft, vandalism, and many natural disasters.
